If you’re planning a summer escape to beautiful Maine, you’re in for a treat! July is one of the best months in Vacationland. You can soak up the sun, explore our fabulous landscapes, and enjoy super fresh produce and seafood. So, grab your shades and let’s dive into a fun-filled July bucket list that will make your time in Maine unforgettable!

Savoring Summer: A July Bucket List

Hit the Beach

Maine’s coastline offers some of the most picturesque beaches in New England. Don’t miss out on the soft sands of Popham Beach or the family-friendly atmosphere at Laite Memorial Beach Park. If hidden gems are more your thing, consider checking out Crescent Beach State Park or the lesser-known Lincolnville Beach. Both offer beautiful scenery with fewer crowds during peak times. Pack a picnic and spend a lazy afternoon soaking up the sun or exploring tidal pools. For a quieter experience, consider visiting during the early morning or late afternoon.

Explore Coastal Trails

If you love to hike, the scenic trails along the MidCoast are calling your name! The Boothbay Region Land Trust boasts stunning views and various trails for all skill levels. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike, you’ll be right in the breathtaking beauty of Maine’s natural landscape. For a more urban trail that offers sweeping views of Casco Bay as well as direct access to the waterfront, check out the Eastern Promenade in Portland. Or if you’d prefer an open summit with fantastic views of Penobscot Bay, Camden Hills, and the St. George Peninsula (along with a historic sod-roofed hut known as Beech Nut!), the Beach Hill Preserve in Rockport has your name on it. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and a camera (or phone) to capture the stunning landscapes. And make sure to check the trail conditions before your hike, especially after wet weather. The Maine Hiking App is an awesome resource for trail insights!

Snack on Fresh Lobster Rolls

No trip to Maine is complete without indulging in a classic lobster roll. Head to classic favorites like Red's Eats in Wiscasset, or for a more local’s experience, check out Simmon’s Lobster Wharf in Friendship for the freshest catch of the day. And, of course, you can’t beat McLoons in South Thomaston or Young’s in Belfast. They are both quintessential lobster pounds, located right on the harbor. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can try varying styles of lobster rolls - some are served warm with butter, while others are cold with mayonnaise. (We are definitely on Team Butter!)

Visit a Local Farmers' Market

Immerse yourself in the local culture by visiting one of the many farmers' markets that pop up during July. You’ll find fresh produce, homemade jams, and handmade crafts - perfect for souvenirs! The Rockport Farmers' Market and the Damariscotta Farmers' Market are two popular spots you won’t want to miss. July is a great time for fresh blueberries, strawberries, and sweet corn. You won’t want to miss the chance to taste these seasonal delights while supporting local farmers!

Take a Scenic Boat Tour

Experience the stunning coastline from the water by taking a boat tour. Explore rugged islands, spot wildlife like seals and eagles, and enjoy breathtaking views of lighthouses. Companies like Cap’n Fish’s Cruises in Boothbay offer a variety of family friendly options like whale watching and puffin tours. If you’re hoping for a more romantic outing, it’s hard to beat the a sailboat cruise. We are partial to Captain Bufflehead out of Rockland and the Schooner Olad out of Camden. A sunset cruise can be particularly magical. Enjoy shifting colors overhead as you glide over calm waters - it's a perfect way to end a day. But be sure to book your boat tour in advance to secure your spot!

Experience Live Music and Local Events

July is buzzing with festivals, concerts, and events that showcase Maine’s vibrant culture. Be sure to check out local event calendars for live music at waterfront venues or local festivals celebrating everything from art to food. Places like the Strand Theatre in Rockland and the Waldo in Waldoboro attract notable artists throughout July - check their schedule for exciting performances!

Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

Get a little adventurous by kayaking or paddleboarding on the beautiful waters of the MidCoast! Rent equipment from local vendors (or use our free if you’re staying at Three Sisters Farm!) and explore hidden coves and the beautiful coastal scenery around you. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, it’s a fantastic way to experience Maine’s pristine waters. If you’re new to paddling, consider joining a guided tour. It’s a great way to learn and meet fellow adventurers. The calm waters of Portland’s Back Cove are ideal for beginners, while more experienced paddlers might enjoy the challenges of open ocean paddling. The tidal cove in Friendship is a happy medium between the two – perfect for every sort of paddler!

Celebrate Maine’s Art Scene

July is a perfect time to explore Maine’s vibrant art scene. Visit local galleries, attend workshops, or even meet artists to learn about their craft. The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland and the Wyeth Center are excellent places to start your artistic adventure. You can also take advantage of Art Walks (held on Fridays in Portland and on Thursdays in Camden) which allow visitors to explore galleries while enjoying refreshments and live entertainment. Pick up a piece of art or craft from a local artist as a memento of your trip!
